what does Community engagement look like?

We begin with research into the community’s history, struggles, and distinct population. Based on the scope of the project, this process can include reviewing historic photos and literature, conducting one-on-one interviews with culture keepers and local historians, attending cultural events and community meetings with residents, and analyzing the resulting data.

During the design stage, we actively involve local residents in brainstorming sessions and feedback processes, ensuring that the artwork reflects their stories and values. We invite community members to contribute directly to the design, fostering a deeper connection and sense of ownership over the final piece.

We encourage local residents to participate in painting sessions or assist in specific design elements, making the creation of the mural a shared experience. This hands-on involvement not only strengthens the community’s connection to the artwork but also provides a platform for ongoing collaboration and feedback as the mural takes shape.

In celebration of the finished mural, we often host an unveiling event with local performances, speeches, and interactive activities that highlight the mural's themes and the contributions of community members. This celebration may also feature guided tours, artist meet-and-greets, and opportunities for residents to share their personal connections to the mural, fostering a sense of pride and collective ownership.

Murals are only a starting point for engagement. Additional activities involving community members or cultural stakeholders can extend the life of a project by weeks, months, or even years.
